Mathematics 11 (Punjab Board)

Exercise 3.1 Solutions

Worked solutions for Punjab Board Class 11 Mathematics, Chapter 3: Theory of Quadratic Functions.

Question 1: Find the maximum or minimum value of each function by completing the square: (i) \(f(x) = x^2 + 6x + 13\) (ii) \(f(x) = x^2 + 5x + 4\) (iii) \(f(x) = -x^2 + 8x + 13\) (iv) \(f(x) = -x^2 - 3x - 5\) (v) \(f(x) = 3x^2 + 6x - 13\) (vi) \(f(x) = -2x^2 - x + 21\).

Har function ko \(a(x-h)^2 + k\) ki form mein likhenge. Phir \(a > 0\) ho to minimum \(k\) at \(x = h\), aur \(a < 0\) ho to maximum \(k\) at \(x = h\).

(i) \(f(x) = x^2 + 6x + 13\)

\[ f(x) = (x+3)^2 - 9 + 13 = (x+3)^2 + 4 \]

\(a = 1 > 0\): minimum value \(4\) at \(x = -3\).

(ii) \(f(x) = x^2 + 5x + 4\)

\[ f(x) = \left(x + \frac{5}{2}\right)^2 - \frac{25}{4} + 4 = \left(x + \frac{5}{2}\right)^2 - \frac{9}{4} \]

\(a = 1 > 0\): minimum value \(-\frac{9}{4}\) at \(x = -\frac{5}{2}\). (An older printed key lists \(-4\) at \(x = -2\) here; the verified completing-square result is \(-\frac{9}{4}\) at \(x = -\frac{5}{2}\).)

(iii) \(f(x) = -x^2 + 8x + 13\)

\[ f(x) = -(x^2 - 8x) + 13 = -\left[(x-4)^2 - 16\right] + 13 = -(x-4)^2 + 29 \]

\(a = -1 < 0\): maximum value \(29\) at \(x = 4\).

(iv) \(f(x) = -x^2 - 3x - 5\)

\[ f(x) = -\left(x^2 + 3x\right) - 5 = -\left[\left(x + \frac{3}{2}\right)^2 - \frac{9}{4}\right] - 5 = -\left(x + \frac{3}{2}\right)^2 - \frac{11}{4} \]

\(a = -1 < 0\): maximum value \(-\frac{11}{4}\) at \(x = -\frac{3}{2}\).

(v) \(f(x) = 3x^2 + 6x - 13\)

\[ f(x) = 3(x^2 + 2x) - 13 = 3\left[(x+1)^2 - 1\right] - 13 = 3(x+1)^2 - 16 \]

\(a = 3 > 0\): minimum value \(-16\) at \(x = -1\).

(vi) \(f(x) = -2x^2 - x + 21\)

\[ f(x) = -2\left(x^2 + \frac{1}{2}x\right) + 21 = -2\left[\left(x + \frac{1}{4}\right)^2 - \frac{1}{16}\right] + 21 = -2\left(x + \frac{1}{4}\right)^2 + \frac{169}{8} \]

\(a = -2 < 0\): maximum value \(\frac{169}{8}\) at \(x = -\frac{1}{4}\) (vertex formula \(h = -\frac{b}{2a} = -\frac{-1}{-4} = -\frac{1}{4}\) confirms the sign).

Answer: (i) min \(4\) at \(x=-3\) (ii) min \(-\frac{9}{4}\) at \(x=-\frac{5}{2}\) (iii) max \(29\) at \(x=4\) (iv) max \(-\frac{11}{4}\) at \(x=-\frac{3}{2}\) (v) min \(-16\) at \(x=-1\) (vi) max \(\frac{169}{8}\) at \(x=-\frac{1}{4}\)

Common mistake: In (vi), the vertex x-coordinate is \(-\frac{1}{4}\), not \(+\frac{1}{4}\) — the formula \(h = -\frac{b}{2a}\) has a leading minus that is easy to drop when \(b\) is already negative.

Question 2: Sketch each function, find its maximum or minimum value, and state the domain and range: (i) \(f(x) = x^2 - 4x\) (ii) \(f(x) = x^2 - 5x + 6\) (iii) \(f(x) = -x^2 + 2x - 8\) (iv) \(f(x) = x^2 - 4x + 4\) (v) \(f(x) = x^2 + 2x - 8.3\) (vi) \(f(x) = 6 - x - x^2\).

Vertex \(h = -\frac{b}{2a}\), \(k = f(h)\) se max/min aur range milti hai. Sketch ke liye y-intercept \((0, c)\) aur x-intercepts (roots) bhi nikaalte hain. Quadratic ka domain hamesha \(\mathbb{R}\) hota hai.

(i) \(f(x) = x^2 - 4x\) — \(a > 0\), opens up. \(h = \frac{4}{2} = 2\), \(k = 4 - 8 = -4\). x-intercepts: \(x(x-4) = 0 \implies x = 0, 4\).

Minimum \(-4\) at \(x = 2\); Domain \(\mathbb{R}\); Range \([-4, \infty)\).

(ii) \(f(x) = x^2 - 5x + 6\) — \(a > 0\). \(h = \frac{5}{2}\), \(k = \frac{25}{4} - \frac{25}{2} + 6 = \frac{25-50+24}{4} = -\frac{1}{4}\). x-intercepts: \((x-2)(x-3) = 0 \implies x = 2, 3\).

Minimum \(-\frac{1}{4}\) at \(x = \frac{5}{2}\); Domain \(\mathbb{R}\); Range \(\left[-\frac{1}{4}, \infty\right)\).

(iii) \(f(x) = -x^2 + 2x - 8\) — \(a < 0\), opens down. \(h = -\frac{2}{-2} = 1\), \(k = -1 + 2 - 8 = -7\). Discriminant \(4 - 32 < 0\): no x-intercepts.

Maximum \(-7\) at \(x = 1\); Domain \(\mathbb{R}\); Range \((-\infty, -7]\).

(iv) \(f(x) = x^2 - 4x + 4 = (x-2)^2\) — \(a > 0\). Vertex \((2, 0)\), touching the x-axis there.

Minimum \(0\) at \(x = 2\); Domain \(\mathbb{R}\); Range \([0, \infty)\).

(v) \(f(x) = x^2 + 2x - 8.3\) — \(a > 0\). \(h = -1\), \(k = 1 - 2 - 8.3 = -9.3\).

Minimum \(-9.3\) at \(x = -1\); Domain \(\mathbb{R}\); Range \([-9.3, \infty)\).

(vi) \(f(x) = 6 - x - x^2 = -x^2 - x + 6\) — \(a < 0\). \(h = -\frac{-1}{-2} = -\frac{1}{2}\), \(k = -\frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{2} + 6 = \frac{25}{4}\). x-intercepts: \(x^2 + x - 6 = 0 \implies (x+3)(x-2) = 0 \implies x = -3, 2\).

Maximum \(\frac{25}{4}\) at \(x = -\frac{1}{2}\); Domain \(\mathbb{R}\); Range \(\left(-\infty, \frac{25}{4}\right]\).

Answer: (i) min \(-4\) at \(x=2\); Ran \([-4,\infty)\) (ii) min \(-\frac{1}{4}\) at \(x=\frac{5}{2}\); Ran \([-\frac{1}{4},\infty)\) (iii) max \(-7\) at \(x=1\); Ran \((-\infty,-7]\) (iv) min \(0\) at \(x=2\); Ran \([0,\infty)\) (v) min \(-9.3\) at \(x=-1\); Ran \([-9.3,\infty)\) (vi) max \(\frac{25}{4}\) at \(x=-\frac{1}{2}\); Ran \((-\infty,\frac{25}{4}]\); all have Domain \(\mathbb{R}\)

Question 3: Find the inverse of each function (on its restricted domain), and state the domain and range of the inverse: (i) \(f(x) = x^2 - 3,\; x \le 0\) (ii) \(f(x) = x^2 + 6x + 4,\; x < -3\) (iii) \(f(x) = 2x^2 - 8x + 11,\; x \ge 2\) (iv) \(f(x) = 3x^2 - 2x + 6,\; x \ge 5\) (v) \(f(x) = 2(x-3)^2 + 1,\; x \ge 3\) (vi) \(f(x) = -3(x+4)^2 - 5,\; x < -4\).

\(y = f(x)\) likh kar \(x\) aur \(y\) interchange karenge, phir quadratic formula se \(y\) solve karenge. \(\pm\) mein se woh branch rakhenge jiska range original restricted domain se match kare. Inverse ka domain = original ki range.

(i) \(f(x) = x^2 - 3,\; x \le 0\) — \(x = y^2 - 3 \implies y^2 = x + 3 \implies y = \pm\sqrt{x+3}\). The inverse's range must be \((-\infty, 0]\), so keep \(y = -\sqrt{x+3}\). Range of \(f\): at \(x = 0\), \(f = -3\); as \(x \to -\infty\), \(f \to \infty\). So:

\(f^{-1}(x) = -\sqrt{x+3}\); Domain of \(f^{-1} = [-3, \infty)\); Range of \(f^{-1} = (-\infty, 0]\). (Check: \(f(-2) = 1\) and \(f^{-1}(1) = -2\) ✓.)

(ii) \(f(x) = x^2 + 6x + 4,\; x < -3\) — \(x = y^2 + 6y + 4 \implies y^2 + 6y + (4-x) = 0\). Quadratic formula:

\[ y = \frac{-6 \pm \sqrt{36 - 4(4-x)}}{2} = \frac{-6 \pm \sqrt{20+4x}}{2} = -3 \pm \sqrt{x+5} \]

Range of \(f^{-1}\) must be \((-\infty, -3)\), so keep \(y = -3 - \sqrt{x+5}\). Vertex of \(f\) is \((-3, -5)\); for \(x < -3\), \(f\) decreases from \(\infty\) to \(-5\) (excluded), so Range of \(f = (-5, \infty)\).

\(f^{-1}(x) = -3 - \sqrt{x+5}\); Domain of \(f^{-1} = (-5, \infty)\); Range of \(f^{-1} = (-\infty, -3)\).

(iii) \(f(x) = 2x^2 - 8x + 11,\; x \ge 2\) — \(x = 2y^2 - 8y + 11 \implies 2y^2 - 8y + (11-x) = 0\):

\[ y = \frac{8 \pm \sqrt{64 - 8(11-x)}}{4} = \frac{8 \pm \sqrt{8x-24}}{4} = \frac{8 \pm 2\sqrt{2x-6}}{4} = \frac{4 \pm \sqrt{2x-6}}{2} \]

Range of \(f^{-1}\) must be \([2, \infty)\), so keep the \(+\) branch. Vertex of \(f\): \(h = 2\), \(k = 8 - 16 + 11 = 3\); Range of \(f = [3, \infty)\).

\(f^{-1}(x) = \frac{4 + \sqrt{2x-6}}{2}\); Domain of \(f^{-1} = [3, \infty)\); Range of \(f^{-1} = [2, \infty)\).

(iv) \(f(x) = 3x^2 - 2x + 6,\; x \ge 5\) — \(x = 3y^2 - 2y + 6 \implies 3y^2 - 2y + (6-x) = 0\):

\[ y = \frac{2 \pm \sqrt{4 - 12(6-x)}}{6} = \frac{2 \pm \sqrt{12x-68}}{6} = \frac{1 \pm \sqrt{3x-17}}{3} \]

Keep the \(+\) branch for range \([5, \infty)\). \(f(5) = 75 - 10 + 6 = 71\), and \(f\) increases for \(x \ge 5\), so Range of \(f = [71, \infty)\).

\(f^{-1}(x) = \frac{1 + \sqrt{3x-17}}{3}\); Domain of \(f^{-1} = [71, \infty)\); Range of \(f^{-1} = [5, \infty)\).

(v) \(f(x) = 2(x-3)^2 + 1,\; x \ge 3\) — \(x = 2(y-3)^2 + 1 \implies (y-3)^2 = \frac{x-1}{2} \implies y = 3 \pm \sqrt{\frac{x-1}{2}}\). Keep \(+\):

\(f^{-1}(x) = 3 + \sqrt{\frac{x-1}{2}}\); Domain of \(f^{-1} = [1, \infty)\); Range of \(f^{-1} = [3, \infty)\).

(vi) \(f(x) = -3(x+4)^2 - 5,\; x < -4\) — \(x = -3(y+4)^2 - 5 \implies (y+4)^2 = \frac{-(x+5)}{3} \implies y = -4 \pm \sqrt{\frac{-(x+5)}{3}}\). Range of \(f^{-1}\) must be \((-\infty, -4)\), so keep \(y = -4 - \sqrt{\frac{-(x+5)}{3}}\). Vertex \((-4, -5)\); for \(x < -4\), \(f\) rises from \(-\infty\) to \(-5\) (excluded): Range of \(f = (-\infty, -5)\).

\(f^{-1}(x) = -4 - \sqrt{\frac{-(x+5)}{3}}\); Domain of \(f^{-1} = (-\infty, -5)\); Range of \(f^{-1} = (-\infty, -4)\).

Answer: (i) \(f^{-1}(x) = -\sqrt{x+3}\), Dom \([-3,\infty)\), Ran \((-\infty,0]\) (ii) \(f^{-1}(x) = -3-\sqrt{x+5}\), Dom \((-5,\infty)\), Ran \((-\infty,-3)\) (iii) \(f^{-1}(x) = \frac{4+\sqrt{2x-6}}{2}\), Dom \([3,\infty)\), Ran \([2,\infty)\) (iv) \(f^{-1}(x) = \frac{1+\sqrt{3x-17}}{3}\), Dom \([71,\infty)\), Ran \([5,\infty)\) (v) \(f^{-1}(x) = 3+\sqrt{\frac{x-1}{2}}\), Dom \([1,\infty)\), Ran \([3,\infty)\) (vi) \(f^{-1}(x) = -4-\sqrt{\frac{-(x+5)}{3}}\), Dom \((-\infty,-5)\), Ran \((-\infty,-4)\)

Common mistake: In (i), writing \(f^{-1}(x) = \sqrt{x+3}\) — that branch has range \([0,\infty)\), but the original domain is \(x \le 0\), so the minus sign is required.

Question 4: Solve: (i) \(|x^2 + 1| = 5\) (ii) \(|x^2 + 5x + 4| = 0\) (iii) \(|x^2 - 6x + 8| = 4\) (iv) \(|3x^2 - 7x + 2| = |x^2 - x + 1|\) (v) \(|x^2 - 4| < 5\) (vi) \(|x^2 - 3x + 2| > 4\) (vii) \(|x^2 - 5x + 6| \le x + 2\) (viii) \(|2x^2 - 3x - 5| < 4\).

\(|A| = B\) se \(A = \pm B\); \(|A| = |B|\) se \(A = \pm B\); \(|A| < B\) se \(-B < A < B\); \(|A| > B\) se \(A < -B\) ya \(A > B\). Inequalities mein dono sides solve karke intersection/union lete hain.

(i) \(|x^2 + 1| = 5\) — \(x^2 + 1 = 5 \implies x^2 = 4 \implies x = \pm 2\); \(x^2 + 1 = -5 \implies x^2 = -6\) (no real solution).

Solution: \(\{-2, 2\}\).

(ii) \(|x^2 + 5x + 4| = 0\) — \(x^2 + 5x + 4 = 0 \implies (x+1)(x+4) = 0\).

Solution: \(\{-1, -4\}\).

(iii) \(|x^2 - 6x + 8| = 4\) — Case \(+\): \(x^2 - 6x + 8 = 4 \implies x^2 - 6x + 4 = 0 \implies x = \frac{6 \pm \sqrt{36-16}}{2} = 3 \pm \sqrt{5}\). Case \(-\): \(x^2 - 6x + 8 = -4 \implies x^2 - 6x + 12 = 0\), discriminant \(36 - 48 < 0\) (no real roots).

Solution: \(\{3 - \sqrt{5},\, 3 + \sqrt{5}\}\).

(iv) \(|3x^2 - 7x + 2| = |x^2 - x + 1|\) — Case 1: \(3x^2 - 7x + 2 = x^2 - x + 1 \implies 2x^2 - 6x + 1 = 0 \implies x = \frac{6 \pm \sqrt{36-8}}{4} = \frac{3 \pm \sqrt{7}}{2}\). Case 2: \(3x^2 - 7x + 2 = -(x^2 - x + 1) \implies 4x^2 - 8x + 3 = 0 \implies (2x-1)(2x-3) = 0 \implies x = \frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{2}\).

Solution: \(\left\{\frac{3-\sqrt{7}}{2},\, \frac{1}{2},\, \frac{3}{2},\, \frac{3+\sqrt{7}}{2}\right\}\).

(v) \(|x^2 - 4| < 5\) — \(-5 < x^2 - 4 < 5 \implies -1 < x^2 < 9\). Since \(x^2 \ge 0\), this is \(0 \le x^2 < 9 \implies -3 < x < 3\).

Solution: \((-3, 3)\) — an interval, not just the two endpoints.

(vi) \(|x^2 - 3x + 2| > 4\) — \(x^2 - 3x + 2 > 4 \implies x^2 - 3x - 2 > 0 \implies x < \frac{3-\sqrt{17}}{2}\) or \(x > \frac{3+\sqrt{17}}{2}\) (roots \(\frac{3 \pm \sqrt{17}}{2}\)); or \(x^2 - 3x + 2 < -4 \implies x^2 - 3x + 6 < 0\), discriminant \(9 - 24 < 0\), never true.

Solution: \(\left(-\infty, \frac{3-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right) \cup \left(\frac{3+\sqrt{17}}{2}, \infty\right)\).

(vii) \(|x^2 - 5x + 6| \le x + 2\) — First \(x + 2 \ge 0 \implies x \ge -2\). Then \(-(x+2) \le x^2 - 5x + 6 \le x + 2\). Right: \(x^2 - 6x + 4 \le 0 \implies 3 - \sqrt{5} \le x \le 3 + \sqrt{5}\) (roots \(3 \pm \sqrt{5}\)). Left: \(x^2 - 4x + 8 \ge 0\), discriminant \(16 - 32 < 0\), always true. Since \(3 - \sqrt{5} \approx 0.76 \ge -2\), the condition \(x \ge -2\) adds nothing.

Solution: \([3 - \sqrt{5},\, 3 + \sqrt{5}]\).

(viii) \(|2x^2 - 3x - 5| < 4\) — \(-4 < 2x^2 - 3x - 5 < 4\). Right: \(2x^2 - 3x - 9 < 0 \implies (2x+3)(x-3) < 0 \implies -\frac{3}{2} < x < 3\). Left: \(2x^2 - 3x - 1 > 0\), roots \(\frac{3 \pm \sqrt{17}}{4} \approx -0.28\) and \(1.78\): \(x < \frac{3-\sqrt{17}}{4}\) or \(x > \frac{3+\sqrt{17}}{4}\). Intersecting:

\[ \left(-\frac{3}{2},\, \frac{3-\sqrt{17}}{4}\right) \cup \left(\frac{3+\sqrt{17}}{4},\, 3\right) \]
Answer: (i) \(\{-2,2\}\) (ii) \(\{-1,-4\}\) (iii) \(\{3\pm\sqrt{5}\}\) (iv) \(\{\frac{3-\sqrt{7}}{2}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{2}, \frac{3+\sqrt{7}}{2}\}\) (v) \((-3,3)\) (vi) \((-\infty,\frac{3-\sqrt{17}}{2}) \cup (\frac{3+\sqrt{17}}{2},\infty)\) (vii) \([3-\sqrt{5}, 3+\sqrt{5}]\) (viii) \((-\frac{3}{2},\frac{3-\sqrt{17}}{4}) \cup (\frac{3+\sqrt{17}}{4},3)\)

Common mistake: In (v), the answer is the whole interval \((-3, 3)\) — writing just \(\{-3, 3\}\) misses every value in between, e.g. \(x = 0\) gives \(|{-4}| = 4 < 5\).
