Chapter 6: Sequences and Series — Theory

Definitions, key results and theory for Punjab Board Class 11 Mathematics, Chapter 6: Sequences and Series.

Sequence

A sequence is a function whose domain is the set of natural numbers \(\mathbb{N}\). Har natural number \(n\) par sequence ki aik term \(a_n\) hoti hai — pehli term \(a_1\), doosri \(a_2\), aur \(n\)th term \(a_n\) ko general term kehte hain.

\[ a_1, \; a_2, \; a_3, \; \dots, \; a_n, \; \dots \]

A finite sequence stops after a fixed number of terms; an infinite sequence goes on forever.

Key point: Agar \(a_n\) ka formula diya ho to koi bhi term \(n\) rakh kar nikali ja sakti hai — yeh sab se basic aur sab se zyada poocha jane wala skill hai.

Arithmetic Progression (A.P.)

Aik sequence A.P. hoti hai jab har term apni pichli term mein aik fixed number \(d\) (common difference) jorne se bane.

\[ a_n = a_1 + (n-1)d, \qquad d = a_2 - a_1 = a_3 - a_2 = \cdots \]

Middle term: agar A.P. mein \(n\) terms hon to darmiyani term \(\frac{a_1 + a_n}{2}\) hoti hai. Selection ke liye teen terms hon to \(a-d, a, a+d\); paanch hon to \(a-2d, a-d, a, a+d, a+2d\) lo — sum nikalne mein \(d\) cancel ho jata hai.

Properties: A.P. ki har term mein aik hi constant jorne/ghataane se phir A.P. banti hai; do A.P.s ke corresponding terms ka sum bhi A.P. hota hai.

Key point: "Terms in A.P." dekhte hi symmetric selection (\(a-d, a, a+d\)) karo — equations aadhi ho jati hain.

Arithmetic Mean (A.M.)

Do numbers \(a\) aur \(b\) ka arithmetic mean unka average hai. \(n\) arithmetic means insert karne par common difference \(d = \frac{b-a}{n+1}\) hota hai.

\[ A = \frac{a+b}{2}, \qquad d = \frac{b-a}{n+1} \]

Key point: \(n\) means insert hon to total \((n+2)\) terms banti hain — isliye denominator \(n+1\) ata hai, \(n\) nahi.

Series and Sum of an A.P.

Sequence ki terms ka sum series kehlata hai. A.P. ke pehle \(n\) terms ka sum \(S_n\) do standard forms mein likha jata hai.

\[ S_n = \frac{n}{2}\big[2a_1 + (n-1)d\big] = \frac{n}{2}(a_1 + a_n) \]

Key point: Aakhri term maloom ho to \(\frac{n}{2}(a_1 + a_n)\) tez hai; warna \(d\) wali form use karo.

Geometric Progression (G.P.)

Aik sequence G.P. hoti hai jab har term pichli term ko aik fixed number \(r\) (common ratio) se multiply karke bane.

\[ a_n = a_1 r^{\,n-1}, \qquad r = \frac{a_2}{a_1} = \frac{a_3}{a_2} = \cdots \]

Properties: G.P. ki terms ko same non-zero number se multiply/divide karne se G.P. rehti hai; teen numbers \(a, b, c\) G.P. mein hon to \(b^2 = ac\).

Key point: Teen numbers G.P. mein hon to unhein \(\frac{a}{r}, a, ar\) lo — product se foran \(a^3\) nikalta hai.

Geometric Mean (G.M.)

Do positive numbers ka geometric mean unke product ka square root hai. \(n\) geometric means insert hon to common ratio \(r = \left(\frac{b}{a}\right)^{\!1/(n+1)}\) hota hai.

\[ G = \sqrt{ab}, \qquad G^2 = ab \]

Key point: A.M. \(\ge\) G.M. hamesha (positive numbers ke liye) — yeh inequality proofs mein kaam aati hai.

Geometric Series

G.P. ki terms ka sum geometric series hai. \(r = 1\) par sum sirf \(na_1\) hota hai.

\[ S_n = \frac{a_1(1-r^n)}{1-r} = \frac{a_1(r^n-1)}{r-1}, \qquad r \ne 1 \]

Agar \(|r| < 1\) to infinite sum converge hota hai:

\[ S_\infty = \frac{a_1}{1-r}, \qquad |r| < 1 \]

Key point: \(S_\infty\) sirf tab jab \(|r| < 1\) — pehle ratio check karo, phir formula lagao.

Arithmetico-Geometric Progression (A.G.P.)

Jab A.P. ki har term ko G.P. ki corresponding term se multiply kiya jaye to A.G.P. banti hai — jaise \(1 \cdot 2 + 3 \cdot 4 + 5 \cdot 8 + \cdots\).

\[ T_n = \big[a + (n-1)d\big] r^{\,n-1} \]

Sum nikalne ka tareeqa: \(S_n\) likho, usay \(r\) se multiply karke ghata do — darmiyani terms G.P. ban jati hai.

\[ S_n = \frac{a}{1-r} + \frac{dr(1-r^{n-1})}{(1-r)^2} - \frac{[a+(n-1)d]r^n}{1-r}, \qquad r \ne 1 \]
\[ S_\infty = \frac{a}{1-r} + \frac{dr}{(1-r)^2}, \qquad |r| < 1 \]

Key point: A.G.P. ka sum hamesha "multiply by \(r\) and subtract" se nikalo — formula ratne se behtar method samajhna hai.

Harmonic Progression (H.P.)

Aik sequence H.P. hoti hai jab uski terms ke reciprocals A.P. mein hon. H.P. ka koi direct formula nahi — har sawal reciprocal lekar A.P. mein hal karo.

\[ a, b, c \text{ in H.P.} \iff \frac{1}{a}, \frac{1}{b}, \frac{1}{c} \text{ in A.P.} \]

Do numbers \(a, b\) ka harmonic mean:

\[ H = \frac{2ab}{a+b}, \qquad \frac{1}{H} = \frac{1}{2}\left(\frac{1}{a} + \frac{1}{b}\right) \]

Teenon means ka relation: \(G^2 = AH\), aur \(A \ge G \ge H\) (positive numbers ke liye).

Key point: H.P. dekhte hi reciprocals lo — uske baad poora sawal A.P. ka ban jata hai.

Miscellaneous Series and Summation Formulas

Kuch series ka \(n\)th term likh kar standard sums lagaye jate hain:

\[ \sum_{k=1}^{n} k = \frac{n(n+1)}{2}, \quad \sum_{k=1}^{n} k^2 = \frac{n(n+1)(2n+1)}{6}, \quad \sum_{k=1}^{n} k^3 = \left[\frac{n(n+1)}{2}\right]^2 \]

Summation ki properties: \(\sum (a_k + b_k) = \sum a_k + \sum b_k\) aur \(\sum c\,a_k = c \sum a_k\).

Key point: Pehle \(T_n\) nikalo (aksar \(n\) ke polynomial ki shakal mein), phir term-by-term sum lagao.
